ABBA |A FATHER WHO KEEPS HIS PROMISES

Genesis 15:6

Scripture: “And he believed the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.”

The story of Abraham and Sarah having children in their old age is such a beautiful example of God being our ABBA who answers prayers and keeps His promises. Abraham had a track record of being a good and faithful servant to God. Abraham and his wife had given up the hope on having children of their own, even to the point where Abraham’s wife, Sarah, took it upon herself to have one of her maids ( an Egyptian woman named Hagar) lay with Abraham so that he would have an heir. Abraham was around 86 years of age at the time.

When Abraham was at the age of 99 years old, God appeared to Abraham and made MANY promises to Him. But before God made these promises to Abraham, God told Abraham what was required of Him. Genesis 17:1 says, “And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.”  God commanded Abraham to walk before Him and to be perfect in his sight! That’s a lot to ask, but God had a lot to give in return.  For this obedience, and according to the bible, Abraham did just that.

God even changed Abraham’s name from Abram, to Abraham, meaning Father of many nations. Among these promises, God promised to bless Abraham and Sarah with a son. Knowing that his wife, Sarai was unable to bear children, Abraham fell upon his face and laughed. In his mind, it seemed crazy to think that a 90 year old women would bare a child. What’s interesting is that the scripture says how Abraham questioned this in his heart, but didn’t speak it with his tongue.

Instead, assuming that God was referring to his son Ishmael - the son he had with Hagar, the handmaid. God made it clear that the heir to his house would be a son, named Isaac, and his wife Sarah would bear this son. As the story continues, God honors His promise. Abraham and Sarah has a son, and Abraham became the Father of many nations. Not only did God answer their prayers and keep His promise, but He blessed their bloodline and established his covenant with them. The same bloodline of King David and Jesus. The example of Abraham and Sarah shows that not only will God answer our prayers, but he will answer them and then some!

We must remember that prayer is important but obedience is key in unlocking the promises of God. Today, let’s be grateful that we have a Father who keeps His promises! A Father who will go above and beyond to keep His promises to His children.

Abba, I pray that the prayers I speak are met with obedience on my part and granted with favor from you. You are a promise keeper and I trust that your word is true. All that is brought to me in spirit and in truth, I trust that you will be faithful to complete it. In Jesus name, Amen.
